The University of Oslo, Norway, (UiO) is a classical university combining excellence in education and research for a broad range of disciplines. UiO was founded in 1811 as the first university in Norway. Its character is a broadly based, non- profit research university with good access to public funding schemes. With an operating annual budget is approx. 700 Mio €, it offers excellent lab and office facilities, as well as state-of-the art libraries and technical support. UiO has top research communities in most areas and currently features eight National Centres of Excellence.

The Section of Geography and Hydrology has a focus on Arctic and Alpine environments, with major expertise in glaciology and permafrost research. Process-based studies make use of numerical modeling guided by field measurements and remote sensing data, which is recognized by the strategic research area “Land-Atmosphere Interactions in Cold Environments”(LATICE), an internal umbrella project fostering interdisciplinary research within different research groups. In permafrost science, the Section currently holds several national and international research grants with a combined volume exceeding 3 Mio €. Examples include permafrost extent mapping with satellite data (ESA GlobPermafrost and SATPERM projects), geohazards from thawing permafrost rockwalls (CRYOWALL project) and improvement of permafrost processes witin Earth System Models (PERMANOR and COUP projects).

Main tasks in the project

UiO will perform catchment-scale modeling of the present and future ground thermal regime in WP1 using the CryoGrid permafrost model suite. Furthermore, it will provide modeling expertise with CryoGrid to WPs 3 and 6.
